Carl and Laura Lentz say Justin and Hailey Bieber ended their housing offer within 24 hours as his affair scandal broke, while Tyler Perry stood by them, too.
Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber are under fire after former Hillsong pastor Carl Lentz and his wife Laura lifted the lid on a painful falling-out in their newly published memoir, Overcoming Infidelity: 10 Conversations to Help You Heal the Hurt, released on October 20.
The book, which chronicles how the couple rebuilt their marriage after Carl's very public cheating scandal, includes a startling account of how the Biebers withdrew a housing offer at the most vulnerable moment in the Lentz family's lives.
According to Page Six, the Lentz family had been in the process of planning a potential move to Brooklyn when Justin, 32, and Hailey, 29, reportedly told them to take their time finding a place and to use their New York apartment for as long as they needed. Carl, Laura and their three children — Ava, 22, Charlie, 20, and Roman, 17 — took the couple up on that offer.
Everything changed in November 2020 when Carl's affair became public knowledge, triggering his dismissal from Hillsong Church in Manhattan over what the church described as "moral failures." Within hours of the story breaking globally, the warm welcome evaporated.
Laura, 48, described receiving a call from someone on the Biebers' team with an urgent message.
Carl, 47, did not spare himself in his account of those events. He acknowledged he had brought disgrace upon himself, but the speed of the eviction hit him hard nonetheless.
Carl's connection to Justin Bieber ran deep. The pastor famously baptised the pop star and the two were regularly photographed together, including as far back as August 2017. Yet when the scandal erupted, Carl noted that the vast majority of their high-profile friends simply disappeared.
The one exception, the book makes clear, was actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry. Carl and Laura singled him out as the only person who "walked straight into fire while the embers were still white hot and offered help."
Representatives for Justin and Hailey Bieber had not responded to requests for comment from Page Six by the time the excerpts were published on 29 October.
Carl and Laura, who remain married, say the memoir's ten conversations reflect the real work they put into saving their relationship after the 2020 crisis.
