Kenya Power has urged electricity consumers to adopt smarter energy habits as a way of cutting down on monthly power bills.

Phantom loading, sometimes referred to as standby power, occurs when devices such as televisions, phone chargers, microwaves, and desktop computers remain connected to a power outlet while not in active use.

Over time, the cumulative effect of multiple appliances doing this simultaneously can add a noticeable sum to a household's electricity bill each month.

Kenya Power advised consumers to unplug devices when not in use, embrace energy-efficient appliances, and be more deliberate about how and when they use electricity at home.

The advisory comes at a time when many Kenyan consumers are grappling with elevated electricity costs.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) revised electricity tariffs, pushing monthly bills higher for both domestic and commercial users across the country.

The increases have drawn widespread concern, particularly among low-income households for whom electricity costs form a significant portion of monthly expenditure. Many consumers have taken to social media to express frustration over bills they describe as unaffordable.

Against this backdrop, Kenya Power's tips on reducing consumption are likely to be welcomed, even as customers continue to press for more lasting relief through regulatory intervention or subsidised rates.
