Winnie Odinga is seeking the Nairobi senatorial seat, currently held by Edwin Sifuna, while Raila Junior is targeting the Kibra parliamentary seat.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a pointed warning to Winnie Odinga and her brother Raila Junior following their decision to enter Nairobi politics ahead of the 2027 General Election, telling both siblings that their party affiliation will make or break their campaigns.
Speaking to KTN News on Wednesday, October 28, Gachagua said he welcomed their entry into the race but insisted that contesting on an ODM ticket in Nairobi would guarantee defeat.
Winnie Odinga is seeking the Nairobi senatorial seat, currently held by Edwin Sifuna, while Raila Junior is targeting the Kibra parliamentary seat occupied by Mwalimu Peter Orero.
Winnie has shown signs of aligning with Sifuna's Linda Mwananchi Movement, whereas Raila Junior remains firmly within ODM.
Gachagua, who leads the Democratic Change Party (DCP), argued that Nairobi is entirely opposition territory and that any candidate associated with President William Ruto's administration would struggle regardless of their profile or public standing.
The former deputy president went further, revealing that his coalition is reconsidering its approach to fielding candidates in the capital, suggesting they may abandon the practice of negotiating a single candidate per seat.
The remarks come days after DCP's Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant James Gakuya, widely known as Bazenga, ruled out any negotiated arrangement with Babu Owino, who is pursuing the same seat on The Mwananchi Party (TMT) ticket.
Gakuya stated he intends to remain on the ballot even if his own party opts to back another candidate, adding that contesting as an independent is among his contingency options should DCP withdraw its support.
